Animalia 2024

A Vegan Art Uprising Exploring
Our Common Animalhood

September 14th (rain date: 15th) 2024
At Opus 40, Saugerties, NY
12 PM to 6 pm

Save the date! We hope you can join us for a day of powerful art and deep introspection.

The Institute for Animal Happiness, in community with Celebrate845 and Phoenix Web, invite everyone to this gathering to talk about/investigate/meditate on empathy, justice, speciesism and more expansive compassion via the portals of art, music, poetry, crafts and engaging opportunities. We are so happy to be bringing this event to the magical venue known as Opus 40 in Saugerties, NY.

Animalia is a unique zero-waste gathering that offers free tabling space for vegan vendors and/or social justice groups*, and sliding scale admission for attendees - that asks the question: What exactly is empathy, and where does it live - in our hearts and in society? We examine collective liberation & intersectional concepts through a vegan lens, via a collage of offerings that includes:

  • LIVE MUSIC: featuring the enchanting local musician, singer and magical songwriter Sandy Bell, the dreamy music of The Repressions, and more to be announced.

  • POETRY: Vegan Poets Stewart Mitchell, Amy Lipman and more

  • Exciting Discussions, Presentations and workshops including:

    • Human and Non-Human Caregivers Assisting the Differently-Abled: Presentation and Discussion bringing together people who do the work of care across speciesist boundaries, for solidarity, innovation & inspiration. Hosted by Rebecca Moore of Institute for Animal Happiness, with Agaphen Hambidge

    • Artist's Roles in Gentrification: Displacement and destruction extends not only to humans, but to native plants and animals. Learn how creatives can have a special role in helping restore balance and equity for all. Facilitated by Celebrate 845!

    • Learn block printing, and create fabulous, upcycled artistic clothes! Facilitated by Rita Bolla and Helena Kaminski! Bring your own clothes to print on or pick from an assortment of free second-hand clothes provided by the wonderful Phoenix Web Collective!

  • Indoor Art Exhibition of powerful vegan artists (Rita Bolla, curator. Featuring Bolla, Coy Jacobs, and others) plus Artists talk.

  • Vegan Food & Craft Vendors: Samosa Shack, Yeah Dawg, Anchor Donuts, and more.

  • Healing and healthy "Mocktails" that provide adaptogenic support

  • Free Vegan Book Swap! Bring a book to share or take one home from the hefty selection of vegan cookbooks, ethical discourses, inspiring stories of rescue and more that we will be bringing.

  • Exciting Raffle - Details to be posted soon (tix will be available online in advance, and at the event) featuring an abundance of unique offerings, with funds raised for Palestinian Children’s Relief Fund (PCRF) and Apex Advocacy!
